Burden of Proof

Three weeks after his 23 birthday, Ethan missed the chance to save his brother's life when he was murdered on the steps of the courthouse in Jacksonville, Florida.  Ever since that fateful day, Ethan has sensed a deep disconnect between the man he should have been and the one he has become.  His days play out a beat too slow, his mind replaying the scene of his failure again and again.

But when his brother's widow appears, asking for his help in uncovering what was really behind his brother's death, Ethan is stunned to hear that she and her late husband were involved in a much larger case than he knew, one that threatens the global power structure.   As Ethan joins the search for answers, he will enter into his own past and discover a means of redeeming his future.

Within the first pages of this novel my heartstrings were pulled.  Ethan is dying, he has a lifetime of regrets.  That right there pulled me in.  I connected.  I know about regrets.  Don't we all though?  Don't we wish that somehow someway we can fix somethings before we pass.  I have to admit there was some of the story line that did not intrigue me, but the personal part of it, that was spectacular.  The second chances, the being able to be at peace when your time comes...That gives hope for those of us dealing with deep regrets.  Maybe for us too, it's not too late.

The Love Note

The Love Note is the first book I have read by Joanna Davidson Politano and I am an instant fan.  First, I need to make mention of the cover.   A beautiful cover is so important in a book, as it is the first thing that normally catches my eye.  The cover of The Love Note is absolutely gorgeous.  It reflects the title perfectly.

Upon reading the back of the book I immediately was reminded of the movie Letters to Juliet.  This is one of my all time favorite movies so I was instantly excited and knew I was in for a treat!

The story is so eloquently written and had a Jane Austen feel to it.  So much of the book revolved around the letter and this was such a unique layer that I found so enthralling.  I don't want to say too much and give away the story, but I was quite surprised at the ending.  Sometimes a book will take a twist that I didn't expect and it turns out to be better than what I could have imagined.  Such was the case here.

I can't recommend this book enough.  If you are a fan of historical fiction this is a must read.  I will be shelfing this one with my other favorite books and will be looking for other books from this author.

FROM THE BACK COVER:

Focused on a career in medicine and not on romance, Willa Duvall is thrown slightly off course during the summer of 1863 when she discovers a never opened love letter in a crack of her old writing desk.  Compelled to find the passionate soul who penned it and the person who never received it, she takes a job as a nurse at the seaside estate of Crestwicke Manor.

Everyone at Crestwicke has feelings - mostly negative ones - about the man who wrote the letter, but he seems to have disappeared.  With plenty of enticing clues but few answers, Willa's search becomes even more complicated when she misplaces the letter and it passes from person to person in the house, each finding a thrilling or disheartening message in its words.

Laced with mysteries large and small, this romantic Victorian era tale of love lost, love deferred, and love found is sure to delight.

The Conqueror

Ad 309, Rome teeters on the brink of war.  Constantine's army is on the move.  On the Rhine frontier, pagan Germanic barbarian Brandulf Rex joins the Roman army as a spy.  Down in Rome, senator's daughter Junia Flavia finds  herself embroiled in anti-Christian politics as she works on behalf of the church.

As armies converge and forces beyond their control threaten to destroy everthing they have worked for, these two people from different worlds will have to fight together to bring down the evil Emperor Maxentius.  But his villainous plans and devious henchmen are not easily overcome.

Will Rex and Flavia live to see the Empire bow the knee to Christ?  Or will their part in the story of Constantine's rise meet an untimely and brutal end?

I knew when I chose The Conqueror to read that I was stepping out of my comfort zone and wasn't really sure what to expect.  Unfortunately, I was very unimpressed by this novel.  If I were to be completely honest I didn't like it at all.  It was very degrading towards woman and it had sexual context that, in my opinion, does not belong in a christian fiction book.  The only positive thing I feel I can say is the author does have a great descriptive writing ability, but for me I couldn't get past the crude way woman were portrayed.

As a christian I cannot recommend this book with a clear conscience.  I did not even finish the book.

The Key To Love

Love doesn't always look the way we expect it

The only thing Bri Duval loves more than baking petit fours is romance.  So much so that she's created her own version of the famous Pansian love-lock wall at the bakery where she works in Story, Kansas.   She never expects a video involving the wall to go viral--or for Trek Magazine to send travel writer Gerard Fortier to feature the bakery.  He's definitely handsome, but Bri has been holding out for an epic love story like the one her parents had.  That most certainly will not include the love-scorning Gerard.

Just when it seems the Pastry Puff is poised for unprecedented success, a series of events threaten not just the bakery but the pedestal she's kept her parents on all these years.  Maybe Gerard is right about romance.  Or maybe Bri's recipe just needs to be tweaked.

Betsy St. Amant Haddox is a new-to-me author.  I really, really wanted to like this book.  The cover is so pretty and eye catching and the title itself grabbed my attention, but what I found within the pages had me struggling to enjoy.
Connecting with the characters of a novel is so important and when I don't feel that connection it seems the whole story falls through for me.  I personally didn't like the main characters.  Bri was annoying to say the least.  Gerard seemed controlling and rude towards women.  I also could not feel any chemistry between the two of them.

I also didn't really feel like this was a good Christian fiction book.  God was not brought into the story line and at one point there was mention of pre-marital sex being okay.  This is not biblical and a book that promotes it, even if it's minor, should not be categorized as a Christian book.

Everyone has different preferences when it comes to what they like to read so just because this was not a good fit for me does not mean others won't love it.

The Edge Of Belonging by Amanda Cox

People considered him homeless because he didn't have an address of his own, but Harvey James would've been homeless even if he owned the turreted mansion off State Route 460.  To have a home, you'd have to feel as though you belonged.

Within the first pages of this book I knew I was going to love it.  The Edge of Belonging is a debut novel by Amanda Cox and if this author continues writing books as this one I can promise you that she will quickly become a favorite of mine.  I am going to be waiting (rather impatiently) for what she releases next.

The novel is a dual story line and jumps between past and present.  Harvey James (who was may favorite character) finds an abandoned newborn and for the first time in his life he feels a sense of human connection. The only problem is that Harvey is homeless.  When two people want to help Harvey find his way, he knows he must keep the baby a secret or risk losing the only person he has ever loved.

Twenty-four years later, Ivy Rose returns to her hometown to oversee her late grandmother's estate sale, she soon discovers that the woman left behind more than trinkets and photo frames - she provided a path to the truth behind Ivy's adoption.  Shocked, Ivy seeks clues to her past, but a key piece to the mystery is missing.

There are several big topics addressed in this book and it was done with such elegance.  I could not put the book down and it left me thinking way after I read the last page.  I really can't recommend this book and this author enough.  This one is going on my favorites shelf and I will be reading it again in the future.

Something Worth Doing - A Book Review

Something Worth Doing by Jane Kirkpatrick is a perfect example of why I love historical fiction.  This book was simply amazing.  I love a book that is not only an entertaining read, but educational as well.  The book is based on a true story.  I had never heard of Abigail Scott before and I loved learning about her life.  What a fascinating woman and I think that her story is an inspiration to woman still to this day.

Jane Kirkpatrick has written so many books and if you are a christian fiction reader I'm sure you are already well acquainted with her work.  This book was by far my favorite of hers to date and I can't recommend it enough.

In 1853, Abigail Scott was a 19 year old school teacher in Oregon Territory when she married Ben Duniway.  Marriage mean giving up on teaching, but Abigail always believed she was meant to be more than a good wife and mother.  When financial mistakes and an injury force Ben to stop working, Abigail becomes the primary breadwinner for her growing family.  What she sees as a working woman appalls her, and she devotes her lie to fighting for the rights of women, including their right to vote.

Following Abigail as she bears six children, runs a millinery and a private school, helps on the farm, writes novels, gives speeches, and eventually runs a newspaper supporting women's suffrage.   Something Worth Doing explores issues that will resonate strongly with modern women:  the pull between career and family, finding one's place in the public sphere, and dealing with frustrations and prejudices women encounter when they compete in male-dominated spaces.  This book will inspire you to believe that some things are worth doing--even when the cost is great.

A Dazzle of Diamonds Book Review

A Dazzle of Diamonds by Liz Johnson is the third book in the Georgia Coast Romance series.  It works as a great stand alone book so no worries about reading the series in order.  It's what I like to call a "fast and fun".  No deep issues, just lighthearted and enjoyable.  There was several parts that I found humorous which is always fun as well.

"Penelope Jean hunter loved every wedding she'd ever been to.  Except her own."

Penelope Hunter loves her job as the events manager at one of Savannah's premier historic venues - until her ex-fiance walks into her office with his new bride to be.  To make matters worse, a scheming social matriarch is intent on seeing Penelope fired, especially if she insists on being seen with Tucker Westbrook.

Since returning from serving two tours in the middle East, Tucker has built a thriving security company.  His work is nearly as stabilizing as his friendship with Penelope, who has been by his side since childhood.  But when the lone candidate for county sheriff goads him, Tucker loses his cool and ends up on the ballot - and the receiving end of a smear campaign claiming the Westbrooks were traitors to the South.

To clear his name, Tucker and Penelope must joing forces to find the truth behind a 150-year-old lost treasure.  But the more time they spend together, the closer she comes to losing her job - and falling helplessly in love.

I love when a love interest starts with a friendship and catches the couple unaware.  Tucker and Penelope had a long lasting friendship and their bond was already very strong.  Such a firm foundation for building a steady relationship.

Even though the story was mostly present day, there was a bit of history as the characters relied on an old diary to help uncover a mystery.  This was such an added plus and made the book all the more enjoyable for me.

My attention was held from the first page to the last.  A perfect blend of mystery, romance and faith.

Pearl In the Sand by Tessa Afshar

If you are familiar with the Bible you probably already know the story of Rahab.  If you are a biblical fiction reader you probably have already read a fictional tale based on Rahab.  Maybe even more than one.  So you may be wondering why you would want to read another.  I'll answer with two words.  Tessa Afshar.

When it comes to biblical fiction there are few authors that can weave a beautiful tapestry of a story like Tessa Afshar.  I'm not sure how she does it, but she has a way of bringing the Bible to life and in the process of reading a fictional account of a true biblical story I feel uplifted and encouraged.

Imagine having a life so wrecked, so deep in sin, so full of heartache.  How can there be hope for such a person?  The story of Rahab shows us that hope is never lost.  No matter how deep in sin you are, there is room for redemption.  Rahab was a life transformed by the love of God and she is even in the lineage of Christ.  How awesome is that?  Just like us!  When we are forgiven, we are engrafted into the family of Christ and become part of His lineage.

One thing I enjoy about biblical fiction is that it helps you envision a better picture of Bible times.  Through the story telling you get more connected to the characters and begin to see them as the real people they were.

I encourage you to pick up this book and read about God's faithfulness, forgiveness and love.

A Life Once Dreamed by Rachel Fordham

A Life Once Dreamed

A Life Once Dreamed by Rachel Fordham is a historical fiction romance.  The story begins with Agnes Pratt running in search of a new start.  There's a shocking secret that she must keep and starting over is the only way.  She settles down in Penance, a rugged town of miners and lumberjacks.  She is now known as Miss Aggie, a respected schoolteacher and what many view as an old maid.  She loves her new life and after six years, it seems like her past is just that, in the past.

When a new doctor comes to town everyone is anxious to find him a bride.  The townspeople are pushing him, and also pushing Miss Aggie.  When Aggie finally meets this new doctor she discovers that it is James, her childhood friend and former sweetheart.  The new simple and carefree life Aggie has obtained is now flipped upside down.  James just wants to find out why Agnes left him and the dreams they were creating for themselves, but he is the one person that Agnes is determined to keep her secret from.

Where You Come From Matters Far Less than Where You're Going

This is such an engaging story that is beautifully written.  Oh, how my heart hurt for Agnes.  Such a sweet character with a sacrificial love.  The friendship between her and James is so strong and the romantic pull is undeniable.  It touches on a tough topic and as you are reading it's important to remember that this is a historical tale.  The same issue today is not viewed in the same manner as it was in the past.  This book had me rooting for love to win unlike any other book in a long time.

I loved the small town of Penance.  It was a perfect example of a small town where everyone is in everyone else's business.  There are several secondary characters that were so likeable that I really hope the Author decides to explore this town further and share another story on one of the characters.

Rachel Fordham is an author I'm keeping my eye on.  She only has a few books out, but I've loved everything I've read so far.

Acceptable Risk by Lynette Eason

Acceptable Risk by Lynette EasonAcceptable Risk by Lynette Eason is the second book in the Danger Never Sleeps series.  Let me just tell you now, you won't sleep either.  At least until you finish the book.  It's one of those "I can't stop reading" books.

From the very first page the mystery and suspense begins.  It starts when Sarah, a military journalist is kidnapped. Sarah is injured during the rescue and now she is back in the states where she finds out her father, who is a General, has ruined her career in his own feeble attempt to keep her safe.  What she doesn't know is that he has hired Gavin Black to protect her.  Gavin is just glad Sarah is safe and wants to protect her anyway so he agrees to the General's request.

Sarah learns that her brother who was suffering PTSD has committed suicide.  She also learns that several Army Veterans have committed suicide and she wants to find out why.  Is there more to this?  Was it really suicide?  It seems that danger lurks around every corner and could it be that someone wants Sarah dead as well?

There are so many great characters in this book.  Sarah and her dad are both so much alike and both complex characters.  Gavin was my favorite character and his intense loyalty to Sarah was an endearing quality.

This is a fast read as it has page turning suspense that keeps you going until the last page.  If you are a fan of Christian Suspense novels this will be one you won't want to pass up.  Lynette Eason is one of my favorite suspense writers and this book is my favorite of hers to date.

Her Secret Song by Mary Connealy

Her Secret Song (Brides of Hope Mountain Book #3) by [Mary Connealy]

I have been a fan of Mary Connealy for years.  Her most recent series, The Brides of Hope Mountain, has reminded me why I love this author so much.  This is definitely my favorite series to date of hers.  It reminded me of The Kincaid Brides series which happened to be the first books I read of Mary's and what started me out as a fan.

Her Secret Song is the final installment of The Brides of Hope Mountain.  I have eagerly awaited to get my hands on each of the three books.  This third story is Ursula's.

Ursula has been living deep in the mountains, alone and bitter.   Her sisters may be embracing a new life but she refuses to let go of the fears and teachings that her grandmother instilled.  After a harsh winter Ursula cannot take being alone any longer.  She decides to risk it all and overcome her fears. She realizes it's time to go down the mountain.  What she doesn't expect to find is a severely wounded man.

Wax Mosby is climbing Hope Mountain in hopes of making restitution.  He was hired to drive the Warden family off their land and was even present when Quill Warden was shot.  He gets wounded during the climb and is pretty sure he has passed on when he sees a beautiful woman helping him.  She sings with the voice of an Angel.

Ursula manages to get Wax to her mountain shelter and the two bond during his recovery.  When Ilsa, Jo and their husbands come to check on Ursula they are shocked to see the man who, in their mind, is responsible for running them off their land and shooting their father.  They all come together in a final show down over the family ranch.

This has been such a fun series to read.  I would definitely recommend reading all three books even though the author writes in such a way they could be stand alone books.  But trust me...it's so much more enjoyable to read the whole story.  I was laughing out loud throughout and loved seeing the transformation of the three sisters.  Especially Ursula since she was a bit more set in her ways being the oldest of the three.

Under The Tulip Tree by Michelle Shocklee

Under the Tulip Tree by Michelle ShockleeLorena (Rena) Leland's family has lost everything during the depression.  A matter of fact, it was Lorena's 16'th birthday that the crash took place.  She never got her celebration and her birthday has since been marked with the tragic events that changed the course of her once wealthy families life.

Fast forward a few years, her family is still struggling, barely making ends meet.  Rena is an out of work reporter.  President Roosevelt has created the Federal Writer's Project for out of work writers and Rena gets a job working for the government.  Her assignment is to interview former slaves as a way to preserve their stories and history.

Rena does not expect her life to be changed through these interviews, but when she meets Frances (Frankie) Washington, a 101 year old former slave, Rena's life is forever changed.  Rena's family is less than thrilled about her new job and she is beginning to see that racism is still a part of her world.

The story jumps between Rena's present day life and 70 years prior as Frankie shares her story.

It has been a while since a book had such a big effect on me.  I stayed up all night reading because I couldn't stop and tears were shed.  It is so beautifully written and at such a time where we are dealing with high racial tensions in our own world, this was a timely read.

I was not aware of President Roosevelt's efforts to do this and I enjoyed learning that bit of history!  That is one thing I always enjoy from a historical fiction read.   I love when I am able to gain knowledge of real historical events.

It also shares a great message of God's love and forgiveness.  I really can't recommend this book enough!

Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for providing me with a copy of this amazing book.  All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Stay With Me by Becky Wade

Stay with Me (Misty River Romance, A Book #1) by [Becky Wade]I don't usually read Contemporary Christian Romance books.  I tend to stay with historical or suspense, but ever so often I step out of my normal genres and pick up something different.  After reading Stay With Me, I'm asking myself why I don't read more books like this!  Especially by this author!

This book had me from the first page.  It is a beautiful story that deals with some really tough subjects.  Genevieve is a Bible study author who, after an ankle surgery, is battling an addiction to prescription pain pills.  After receiving an anonymous letter about her parents past, she returns to her hometown.  After a long night, Genevieve takes some pills and ends up asleep in the beautiful farm house that belongs to Sam Turner.  When Sam finds Genevieve asleep on his property, he can't seem to wake her.  He soon finds out her secret.  This is the last thing Sam wants in his life as he is still dealing with the guilt of his own past, but it seems as God has another plan.

Just about every emotion is visited in this book.  I found myself laughing in several places, frustrated in others, and also at times hopeful as well as saddened.  There is a family secret that two sisters work to uncover and I enjoyed the mystery it brought to the book.  There is a great message of grace and forgiveness and I loved the gospel message that the author brought out.

This just so happens to be the first book in The Misty River Romance series and you better believe I'll be reading the rest of the series.

Love's Mountain Quest by Misty M. Beller

Love's Mountain Quest (Hearts of Montana Book #2) by [Misty M. Beller]Love's Mountain Quest is the second book in the Hearts of Montana Series by Misty M. Beller.  It works great as a stand alone book, but I think you would enjoy reading them in order as this book continues on with some of the same characters that were in the first book.

Joanna has recently been widowed and left alone to care for her five year old son, Samuel.  Samuel is full of spunk and a regular little chatterbox.  Isaac, who came to Joanna's rescue is still drawn to her.  He is so concerned about her welfare and does his best to check on her, provide food for her and help when needed.  He would like to pursue her in a romantic way, but because of his past sins he feels he is unworthy of her love.

Joanna's friend is watching Samuel and they both are kidnapped.  Joanna is frantic and Isaac runs to her aid and the two of them head to the mountains, hot on the trail of the kidnappers.  As it becomes apparent where the trail is leading them, Isaac knows good and well where they are going...straight to the past that he wanted to leave behind.  All of his secrets will soon be revealed.  Can he find redemption from God and from the woman he loves or is his past going to destroy his future?

I did not want to put this book down!  It was so enjoyable.  Joanna is such a strong woman, who fights through her circumstances.  She also is a mother determined.  Nothing is going to keep her from saving her son.  Isaac is such an admirable man and my heart was so sad for him.  The burden of his past weighed heavy on him.  This was something that was very relatable to me.  So often we let our past sins keep us from living life abundantly like we are meant to once we are forgiven.

I am excited to see what book three has to offer.  I hope to revisit Joanna and Isaac!

Piecing It All Together by Leslie Gould

Piecing It All Together by Leslie Gould is the first book in the Plain Patterns series.  The story centers around to women, one from the past and one from the present.

Savannah Mask has a future that is all planned out, but when her fiance suddenly calls off their wedding, Savannah's world comes crashing down.  Savannah decides to return to her roots and visit her Amish grandmother until she can decide where she wants to go from here.  While there, she learns through a story told at a quilting circle about Emma Gingrich.  Emma suffered a lot in life, but proved to be a strong woman with endurance.   This helps Savannah through her current situation.

Both of the characters are very interesting.  I seemed to connect more with Savannah.  There was also some side stories going on within the Amish community that I really enjoyed.  I'm curious to see if there will be glimpses into Savannah's life as the series continues.

It has been a while since I've read a book by Leslie Gould.  I won't wait so long next time!

An Appalachian Summer

An Appalachian Summer by [Ann H. Gabhart]Before we get to far into things lets just take a minute to appreciate the cover of this book.  I mean, just look at it.  The beautiful colors, the cabin in the back...doesn't it just make you want to escape to the mountains!

Well, that's pretty much what Piper Danson does.

Even in the midst of the depression Piper's parents insist on a debutante party.  Their goal is for her to marry a rich man, and not to worry, love will come later.  Piper is less than thrilled, but agrees to the party to make her mom happy.  The only man she can imagine marrying is Jamie, but his family has moved away after losing everything.  Braxton Crandall is the man her parents want her to marry.  He can provide for her the way she is used to.

The day after the party Piper meets Mary Breckenridge, the founder of the Frontier Nursing Service in  the Appalachian mountains.  Piper is able to convince her parents to let her volunteer over the summer.  Piper's adventure has just begun.  She is now spending her days caring for horses, milking cows and even assisting with the delivery of babies.  Her life is transformed.  How can she go back to the life her parents want for her.  Doesn't she deserve happiness?  Shouldn't she be free to marry her true love and not someone who her parents have picked out for her?

This is such an enjoyable read.  I loved that it touched on two completely different lifestyles during the depression.  I've always enjoyed reading stories about midwifery and books set in the Appalachian mountains.  This one was a bit different than previous reads and that made it all the more enjoyable.

Don't Keep Silent

Don't Keep Silent (Uncommon Justice Book #3)We are in the middle of a heat wave here in Missouri, so staying cool in the nice air condition with a good book is the way I want to spend my afternoons.  I've been reading a lot of books lately and for the first time, I have several going at the same time.

Let me tell you about the most exciting one I've read lately!  Don't Keep Silent by Elizabeth Goddard.  It is the third and final installment in the Uncommon Justice series.  It makes a great stand alone book, but trust me when I say you will want to read them all.

When I began reading Don't Keep Silent I knew while reading the prologue that I was in for a treat.  Seriously!  I was on the edge of my seat during the prologue!  How crazy good is that!  The fast pace and intense situations continued throughout this book.  Add an intense relationship, and for me, it felt like I found gold in this book.

Rae Burke is on a mission to find her missing sister-in-law Zoey.  What she doesn't expect, is to run into Liam Mckade.  To say there is a history between them is an understatement.  After all, Liam almost lost his life saving Rae.  Now he finds himself in a similar situation.  As he joins forces to help Rae, danger seems to surround them.  Liam has no choice but to protect her once again.  Everything they thought they left in their past is catching up with them....including their feelings for each other.

A couple other great things I want to make mention of is the way God is so easily brought into the story line.  The prayers are beautiful!  "God, you're here in this place.  In the stars above.  In the mountains and the woods, smiling down at me from heaven and here with me now, closer than I can understand."  It also brings light to human trafficking which is such an important issue that needs more attention brought to it.

What Momma Left Behind

What Momma Left BehindI'm so excited to tell you about this amazing book!  What Momma Left Behind by Cindy K. Sproles.  If the name doesn't grab your interest just look at that beautiful cover!  And if your still not sure, let me tell you a little about it.

The setting is the Apppalachian Mountains in the late 1800's.  Influenza and typhoid have hit the mountains hard and many of the children have been left orphaned.  Worie's mother has been secretly taking care of and feeding the children, but then the unthinkable happens and Worie is now an orphan herself.  Worie is seventeen years old and trying to cope with her own grief.  She begins to find out that these little children have depended on her mother and now she is determined to find a way to care for them herself.

Worie has two no good brothers.  One is greedy and down right mean.  The other is a drunk.  Worie is in for the fight of her life to save her home and the children who are now depending on her.  Along the way, she begins to discover unconditional love, forgiveness and sacrifice.
Image may contain: text

Worie is such a fun character.  She is a little spit fire.  She is not afraid to get up in the face of danger and push back with all that's in her.  She speaks a little too quick and tends to create trouble for herself by not thinking before acting.  As the story progresses we see Worie mature into an amazing woman.

There's so much I could say about this book, but it's so hard as to not give any spoilers away.  There were some twists in this that definitely caught me off guard and the ending was so beautiful.

This is the third book I've read by Cindy K. Sproles and she has such a gift of telling a story.  She pulls you in and makes you feel like you are right there experiencing every high and low right along with the characters.

I really can't recommend this book enough!  I've already told family members about it and I am loaning it out.  Do yourself a favor and grab a copy!  I think you'll love it as much as I did!

Hadley Becketts Next Dish

Celebrity Chef Maxwell Cavanagh is known for many things:  his multiple Michelin stars, his top-rated Culinary Channel show to the Max, and most of all his horrible temper.  Hadley Beckett, host of the Culinary Channel's other top-rated show, At Home with Hadley, is beloved for her Southern charm and for making her viewers feel like family.

When Max experiences a very public temper tantrum, he's sent packing to get his life in order.  When he returns, career in shambles, his only chance to get back on TV and in the public's good graces is to work alongside Hadley.

As these polar-opposite celeb chefs begin to peel away the layers of pubic persona and reputation, they will not only discover the key ingredients for getting along, but also learn the secret recipe for unexpected forgiveness and maybe even love.  In the meantime, hide the knives.

I wanted to like this book.  I tried to like this book, but it just didn't click with me.  I've never been one to enjoy cooking shows, so maybe the whole topic just didn't spark my interest enough.  I could not connect with the characters and I could not get into the storyline.  I really had high expectations.  I thought it would be a fun and quirky read, but it just didn't happen.

Everyone is different though and just because I couldn't get into the book, doesn't mean it wouldn't be a perfect read for you!  If you like modern day books, with an opposites attract type romance go ahead and give it a try.

Starfish Pier

Starfish Pier is book six of the Hope Harbor series by Irene Hannon.  I did not realize this book was part of a series until after, so I would have to say it makes a great stand alone book.  However, after reading other reviews I think the story would be greatly enhanced if you read the whole series which are all set in Hope Harbor and I think it would help you connect with the other town folk.  Plus, if the other books are as good as this one I think it would be an added bonus!  I need to check out the other books myself!

This is a modern day romance which is not my most favorite genre, but this was a nice change of pace to my normal reading.

A Year ago, ex-Delta Force operator Steven Roark let the rigors of combat behind to run fishing charters in Hope Harbor, decompress and talk some sense into his kid brother.  Business is good, but making peace with his past is more challenging than he expected.

First grade teacher Holly Miller leads a quiet, low-profile existence until she's recruited to advocate for a cause that dear to her heart.  When she solicits Steven's assistance, sparks fly--especially after they find themselves on opposite sides of an issue that disrupts their placid seaside community.

As these two seemingly incompatible souls search for common ground, might they discover a deeper connection and find that love can banish darkness and light the way to future with promise?

I love a book that has deeper meaning that pulls on the heartstrings of your heart as you read.  This was just such a book.  It is filled with hope, mercy and love.

If you find yourself with a lot of extra time right now, which most of us our, you should grab hold of all six books in this series and sit yourself down for a nice long read!

On a Coastal Breeze

On a Coastal Breeze by Suzanne Woods Fisher is the second book in The Three Sisters Island book.  You could read this book as a stand alone, but trust me when I say you would enjoy it so much better if you read the first book also.

The second book picks up where the first book left off and it's a continuation of an ongoing story of three sisters.  I love this kind of series, because I can connect with a character and continue to learn about them in the following books.  It's like hearing news from an old friend.  Even if the new book doesn't focus on the same character you still get glimpses into their life.

I love the setting of this series.  A small island where everyone knows everyone and time moves at a slower pace.  I lived in a small town for about fourteen years so I am very familiar with that kind of life style and it really is a great way to live.

In this second book, the focus is mainly on Madison.  Madi feels like she is finally getting her life in order.  She is starting her own practice as a therapist, and even though there is a shortage of eligible men on the island, Madi is content with where she is in life.  Things are finally going good.  But then, Ricky O'Shea drops in.  Literally.  From a parachute he floats right into Madi's life and becomes the new minister on the island.

I think you'll love this series.  It has a "home-like" feeling and the characters are so fun and quirky.  This is what I like to call an easy read.  Just curl up and enjoy!  A cup of coffee won't hurt either!

Standoff by Patricia Bradley

Standoff by Patricia Bradley is the first book in the Natchez Trace Park Rangers series.  I don't know about you, but I used to think Park Rangers had a rather peaceful job enjoying the great outdoors while making sure no one is hunting or fishing illegally. More recently I've realized it can entail a lot more than that.  This book deals with some of the more specific dangers such as murder, drugs, etc.

Brooke Danvers wants to follow in her father's footsteps and she has just been promoted to Park Ranger.  John Danvers, Brooke's dad, has secretly been investigating a drug ring and on Brooke's first day her father is killed in the line of duty.  Brooke fights to be on the case and is certain that her dad did not kill himself as the report states.  When Luke Fereday, Brooke's childhood friend, shows up for the funeral, he becomes a strong ally for Brooke and they team up to find out what really happened.  Luke seems to know more than he's letting on and maybe he's hiding a secret or two of his own.  Does Brooke really know him anymore?  Can she count on him to help her discover the truth?  Will the ever-growing feeling between them be a distraction?

This book starts off with a bang and it doesn't stop until the last page!  I love a good suspense and trying to figure it out as I read is so much fun.  Especially when the author gives so many twists and turns.  There were a couple surprises that caught me off guard in this book and I can't wait to read the next book in the series!

Silent Shadows

Silent Shadows is the third and final book of the Harbored Secrets by Natalie Walters.  Even though it would make a good read by itself I would definitely read all three books as one continuous story.  The books are all set in the tiny town of Walton Georgia and if you read all three books you'll enjoy getting to know the people in this small town at a deeper level.

In this small town you'll find that everyone knows everyone, but there are people who live there that have some big secrets.  In Silent Shadows Pecca Gallegos has just moved to the town of Walton to protect her son and escape the dangerous lifestyle that once defined her.  When a series of strange circumstances evolve into threats Pecca finds herself confiding in an unlikely ally - her stubborn patient.

Army veteran Colton Crawford is desperate to recover from the un-diagnosed disorder that is ruining his life, and his instincts are on high alert when threats against his nurse and her son force him to take action.  But Colton's involvement only ramps up the danger when he uncovers a family secret revealing that whoever is after Pecca is closer and more deadly than they realized.

When I first began this series, it was the beginning of social distancing and I really struggled with the first book.  I had a hard time focusing and found myself reading the same pages over and over because my mind was all over the place.  As the days have turned into weeks I have found that reading is a great escape from reality and I am so glad I didn't give up on this series.  This final book ended with a bang. Probably my favorite out of the three.

If you are a fan of Christian suspense this would be a great book for you.  With so much time on our hands right now, what better time than to start a new series.  I think you'll really enjoy this one!

The Traitor's Pawn by Lisa Harris

I can usually tell by the first chapter of a book how well I'm going to like it.  On occasion I will come across a book that grabs me from the very first page. The Traitor's Pawn was just such a book.  From the very first page I was hooked.  The way it started had me at the edge of my seat and I knew immediately I was in for a page turning, suspense and action filled book.

Jack Shannon has returned to Corpus Christi,Texas and is focused on finding the man who has been selling encrypted government secrets to the Chinese through online chat rooms.  When a senator is shot during a hunting trip and the woman he was with is abducted, Jack agrees to join the search--especially when he discovers that the kidnapping victim is Aubrey Grayson, a woman he was once in love with.

As the search continues, it becomes clear the senator may not have been the intended victim and Aubrey may be connected to the other case Jack is supposed to be working on.  Can Jack untangle the knots before it's too late?  And when he learns the truth,  will it be too painful to get past?

I really enjoyed the romance between Jack and Aubrey.  It had the right amount of romance sprinkled throughout the book that kept you rooting for their relationship, but not over the top mushy.  This is also a good stand alone novel.  No worries about getting to the end of the book and be left hanging or waiting for the next book.

If you are a fan of Christian suspense I would highly recommend this book.  Just be prepared to get nothing else done until you reach the last page.  It's a great, clean Christian suspense novel.

Star of Persia: Esther's Story by Jill Eileen Smith

When it comes to biblical fiction Jill Eileen Smith is one of my favorite authors.  Star of Persia is a perfect example as to why.  The story of Esther comes alive like never before in this fast paced novel that will transport you to biblical times.  The story stays fairly true to the biblical account, but gives added details that can bring you a deeper understanding of what life was like and the true risk that Esther braved for the people of God.

The first few chapters were from Vashti's point of view and I loved getting to see things from her perspective.  The details of the courtyards and the palace make it so easy to imagine the beauty of it all.

I think it's important to remember while reading biblical fiction that it's just that....a fiction account of a biblical truth.  God tells us the beautiful story of Esther in his word and I always like to go back and read the story from the Bible after reading the biblical fiction account.  This book was so beautifully written, just remember it's for entertainment so to speak.

Jill Eileen Smith gave a great look inside of her research at the end of the book and I enjoyed reading this about as much as I enjoyed the book itself.  I love to see how author's come about their stories and while reading Star of Persia it is evident that much research was put into this book.

One way I know I've found a good book is when I lose sleep over it.  I stayed up all night to finish it.  I could not put it down! I consider it a must read!

The Happy Camper by Melody Carlson

I don't often read present day novels, but occasionally I get in the mood to read something different.  I chose The Happy Camper for that very reason. It just seemed different to me.  I mean, a book about a camper?  Well, maybe that's what intrigued me with it.  I've always dreamed of owning an old camper and being able to restore it.  Our family likes to go camping and when we do we stay in a tent, but we always like to take a walk to the camper side and the one's that catch my eye are those restored vintage campers.  They are so adorable.  The way Melody Carlson describes the campers in this book is so detailed that I can picture them perfectly in my mind. But let's hold up a minute.  This book isn't just about restoring vintage campers. It is fun, quirky and what I like to call a quick read. You just have to read and enjoy!

Dillon Michaels is fed up with her non-committal boyfriend and in a spur of the moment decision she breaks up with him, quits her job and heads home to her aging and grieving grandpa's house to help him in his time of loss.  Upon arrival she is shocked to find her eccentric mother has beat her there and is staying in Dillon's room.  Dillon gets stuck on a saggy couch, but to her surprise her grandpa gifts her with a run down camper.  Dillon is thrilled and instantly begins the restoration process of her new tiny home.  She seeks help from Jordan Atwood the owner of the local hardware store.

Her life finally seems to be falling in place, but when she least expects it her ex boyfriend shows up....with a proposal.

So to be a little nit-picky.  First, the character names really bugged me in this book.  Maybe I'm just showing my age here, but Dillon seems like a guys name to me and Jordan a girls.  Second, it bugged me that Dillon called her mom by her first name.  They didn't have the best relationship, but it still seemed strange to me.  Third and last is that Dillon needed to be more firm with her ex.  That was just ridiculous.  Overall though, like I stated in the beginning, this was a fun and enjoyable book.

Out of the Embers by Amanda Cabot

Oh how I love historical fiction!  Throw in a little romance and a little mystery and it will be a book that I don't want to put down.  That's exactly what I had with Out of the Embers by Amanda Cabot.  It is the first book in the Mesquite Springs series and I am already counting down the days until I can get the second book in my hands.  Until then this one is going on my list of favorites and it is definitely one I will be reading again.

Although it is set in the fictional town of Mesquite Springs in Texas I found a bit of a connection there.  My son and daughter in law live in Texas in the town of Mesquite so I thought that was pretty cool.

I loved the characters in this book.  From the main characters on down, I felt like I was living in a small town getting to know all the townsfolk.  I have a hunch I know who the second book will be about, but I'm also looking forward to seeing how some of the other characters are doing.

So let me tell you a little more about it!  Evelyn Radcliffe has been an orphan ever since she witnessed the murder of her parents as a little girl.  She's always had an eerie feeling that someone is watching her and when the orphanage that she lives in is burnt to the ground and the only survivors are herself and Polly, a little orphan girl, she knows she must flee for her life.

Evelyn finds herself in Mesquite Springs and finds refuge in the home of the Clark's.  Wyatt Clark is a horse rancher who's plans do not include having a family of his own.  As the days go by Wyatt and Evelyn continue to draw close to each other, but when danger finds Evelyn her life once again is in danger.  Will Wyatt be able to protect her from the man who seeks her life?

Since most of us are social distancing and finding ourselves with more time on our hands, this is the perfect time to take a deep breath, fix a cup of coffee and get lost in a book.  This is a great one to start with!

Woman Of Sunlight

Woman Of Sunlight by Mary Connealy is the second book in the Brides of Hope Mountain Series.  I had been waiting rather impatiently for this book ever since I finished Aiming For Love, the first book in the series.  Now that I have finished this one I am already counting down the days until the third book releases!  I love this series so much.

Ilsa and her sisters have been raised in isolation in the mountains of Colorado.  They were raised by their grandparents and were taught to fear people and that going to town would bring sickness and possibly death.  With both of their grandparents gone the girls have been living alone and are extremely self sufficient.  When the Warden family comes to the mountain in need, the sisters help them out.

Mitch has left his life in New York City and is now living on the mountain with his family.  Ilsa and Mitch are drawn to each other, but it seems that the thing they do best is fight.  When Mitch's past catches up with him, he realizes that he has put everyone's life in danger.  He is determined to resolve the problem, but that means a trip to town and Ilsa insists on going with him.  Once in town they embark on a very surprising adventure!

This book was so entertaining!  It had me laughing out loud on several occasions and it had a sort of  "Tarzan and Jane" feel with the roles reversed.  I have to admit that I was very surprised with the twists and turns of this book.  It was a lot different than I expected it to be and I loved the suspense.  I don't want to include any spoilers, so I'll just say that I didn't see that coming!

I enjoyed getting to catch up with Dave and Jo from the first book and the ground work has been set for the third book which will be Ursula's story.  It's going to be good!  I can't wait to see how this series wraps up.

Two Steps Forward

The Deacon's Family Series comes to an end with Two Steps Forward.  You could probably read this book as a stand alone, but I would not recommend it.  There are many repeat characters and as you read through the series you become quite connected to them.  When you see their story continuing to unfold in each book it's like visiting an old friend.  You want to hear about all that's been going on in their life and how they are doing. In this series it is Luke and Izzy.  I loved revisiting them!

Two Steps Forward is about Jimmy and Sylvie.  Jimmy has been away from the Amish community for four years working in Colorado with horses.  He is used to getting by on his good looks and his charm...until Sylvie.  Sylvie is a widow and she hires Jimmy to work on her farm because of his knowledge of horses, but it seems that is all she's interested in.  However, it's not long before he manages to steal her heart.

Jimmy's mom Edith believes that Sylvie's farm belongs to her and she is working on a way to claim back the land.  Has Sylvie made a terrible mistake in falling for Jimmy?  Has he been using his charm just to get her land?

Suzanne Woods Fisher is an amazing Amish fiction author.  Her series wraps up perfectly.  What I like best about her books is that they are, what I call, easy reads.  They are enjoyable, and steady paced.  Not a lot of surprises, but such well developed characters that you can connect with.  This is the kind of book I like to snuggle up under a cover with and read while drinking coffee.

Collision of Lies - A Book Review

Collision Of Lies by Tom Threadgill is a book you are not going to want to put down until the last page is read.  It has page turning suspense and if you are like me and like to read at night, be prepared for lack of sleep!

Several years ago there was a tragic accident between a freight train and a school bus. All the children on the school bus were killed.  There is one mom who refuses to believe her child perished and after a strange phone call she seeks the help of law enforcement.  Amara agrees to look into it even though she believes all the children died in the crash.  It doesn't take long that she starts to think otherwise, but how is she going to convince everyone else that the boy is still alive when all evidence points to the opposite.  Could it be that the whole collision was based on lies?  Are the other children alive as well? Amara is determined to find the answers.  No matter the cost.

This book was the first I've read by author Tom Threadgill and he made me a fan!  It has everything I like in a good suspense novel.  The element of surprise with plenty of twists and turns, well developed characters and suspense that keeps you guessing.  I can usually tell if I will like a suspense novel if the first chapter captivates me.  That's exactly what this book did.  If you love suspense novels, I encourage you to read this one.  You're sure to love it!

The Land Beneath Us by Sarah Sundin

The Land Beneath Us is the third book in the Sunrise at Normandy series by Sarah Sundin.  It makes a great stand alone book as I did not read the other two books in the series before this one, but trust me, if you love this book as much as I did you are going to want to read the other two as soon as you finish so you might as well start from the beginning!

It is a historical Christian Romance set in England during 1943/44.  The historical aspect shows the training of the U.S. Army Rangers up to D-day and their invasion.

Clay Paxton has been betrayed by his brothers in the worst way and he struggles with forgiveness.  Due to a recurring dream he has about his death, he now has purpose.  He must fulfill God's will for his life, by seeing the dream come to pass.

Leah Jones works as a Librarian at Camp Forest.  During her spare time she searches for clues to her family.  When she was four years old her and her twin sisters became orphans when their parents suddenly died in a horrible accident.  She longs to be reunited with her sisters, but her life is turned upside down when she is brutally attacked.  Clay saves her life and marries her to save her virtue.  When he is shipped out to train for D-day him and Leah keep in touch through letters.  As time passes their relationship strengthens and love blossoms, but neither of them can ignore Clay's dream. They know what his future holds due to his recurring dream.  Will their love be strong enough to save Clay from impending death?

I could not put this book down.  When I wasn't reading it I was thinking about it.  It was one of the best books I have read in a long time.  Leah's outlook on life is so uplifting despite the tragedies that always seem to follow her.  She is definitely an overcomer and her faith in God is inspiring.  Clay is so kind-hearted and driven by his love for God and pursing God's will.  As you read the book you can see both Clay and Leah grow in their relationship with each other and God.  The self sacrificing love portrayed in this book is one of my favorite things about it.

I can't recommend this book enough.  You're sure to love it!
