Ann H Gabhart has worked her way up my list of favorite authors and When The Meadow Blooms is the perfect novel to show why. I thoroughly enjoyed this story from the start to finish.
Rose has spent the last two years in a sanatorium recovering from tuberculosis. Her husband died during the 1918 influenza epidemic and her two daughters have been at an orphanage waiting for their mother to recover. The treatment the girls are receiving at the orphanage has raised concern and Rose writes a letter to her husband brother Dirk asking for his help.
Dirk was badly burned in a fire and has visible scars that make most people shy away from him. His heart was also burnt badly when he was abandoned by the woman he loved. He lives a secluded life at Meadowland and it is the perfect place where Rose can continue healing from her tuberculosis and the girls can have a home again. Dirk brings them all back to his farm, but he is so guarded and does not want to get hurt again, but these three visitors, his family, find a way to bring healing to his life.
The first part of this book gave me Little Princess feels with the things that were going on within the orphanage. all of the characters were so interesting and this has been my favorite book by this author to date. Possibly even my favorite that I've read this year.
